Austin: Two Ideas (Part 2)

This one is made to billboard specifications. 32 by 10. This is meant to be blown up as a way to advertise Austin, perhaps to cities nationally or just ones near Austin. As I was playing with Austintatious, I noticed Austin starts with “Au,” the chemical symbol for gold on the periodic table. The idea practically made itself. I thought it’d be fun to add the subtle reference into Austin’s name.

It inspired me to make a very minimalist, Didot-only design that cuts right to the chase: Austin is awesome… or, “Ausome,” if I’m being playful.

I’m really enjoying dissecting the name of the city and looking for deeper meanings. Austin is the next big thing with regards to American cities. The growth it has experienced over the last decade and a half is unreal. It’s so substantial that the traffic in Austin is horrendous. The main city is sliced by the Colorado River, so the only way into the city from that side is by going over bridges. Pair that with construction to compensate for the population boom, and you get gridlock traffic six hours out of the day. It’s the worst part, for sure, but being there is so serene you almost don’t notice it!
